چکیده

Obtaining accurate melodic contours from polyphonic music is essential to several music-informationretrieval (MIR) applications and is also useful from a musicological perspective. The presence of tabla and tanpura accompaniment in north Indian classical vocal performances, however, degrades the performance of common pitch detection algorithms (PDAs) that are known to provide accurate results when presented with monophonic singing voice. Recently, a melody extraction algorithm designed to be robust in the presence of the accompaniment was proposed. In this work, the same melody extraction algorithm is tested on actual professional vocal performances, facilitated by the availability of timesynchronized multi-track recordings of the voice, tabla and tanpura. The results indicate that the new method is indeed very robust to the presence of accompaniment clearly overcoming the limitations posed to melody extraction by the widely used monophonic PDAs.

Data-Driven Exploration of Melodic Structure in Hindustani Music

Indian art music is quintessentially an improvisatory music form in which the line between ‘fixed’ and ‘free’ is extremely subtle. In a rāga performance, the melody is loosely constrained by the chosen composition but otherwise improvised in accordance with the rāga grammar. One of the melodic aspects that is governed by this grammar is the manner in which a melody evolves in time in the course...

The Marvels of the Human Voice: Poem-Melody-Vocal Performance

This paper examines and compares vocal performances. It also follows the path of poem to melody to singing, and their interrelations. Results are demonstrated in examples in which comparison is made between performances of the same melody by two or more artists in: “Au Cimetière” by Berlioz, “Der Tod und das Mädchen” by Schubert, the Aria “In Questa Reggia” (Turandot) by Puccini, and the ariett...

Multiple Viewpoint Modeling of North Indian Classical Vocal Compositions

Previous research has shown that ensembles of variable length Markov models (VLMMs), known as Multiple Viewpoint Models (MVMs), can be used to predict the continuation of Western tonal melodies, and outperform simpler, fixed-order Markov models. Here we show that this technique can be effectively applied to predicting melodic continuation in North Indian classical music, providing further evide...
